Prof. Hassan Khalilieh
- Hassan Khalilieh – J.S.D. in law, School of Law, Saint Thomas University (2018), L.LM. (2006) in Admiralty and Maritime Law, School of Law, Tulane University, and Ph.D. (1995) in Near Eastern Studies, Princeton University – is a legal historian specializing in classical Islamic private and public international law. My research interests lie principally in the fields of Islamic admiralty and commercial law, Islamic public international law (siyar) with a particular emphasis on the law of the sea – and the maritime heritage and civilization in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea from the rise of Islam to the early Ottoman period. Among my major publications are: Islamic Law of the Sea: Freedom of Navigation and Passage Rights in Islamic Thought (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2019); Admiralty and Maritime Laws in the Mediterranean Sea (ca. 800-1050): The Kitāb Akriyat al-Sufun and the Nomos Rhodion Nautikos (Leiden: E.J. Brill, 2006); Islamic Maritime Law: An Introduction (Leiden: E.J. Brill, 1998). Currently, I am working on a manuscript exploring the origins and development of Islamic admiralty and maritime laws in the western Indian Ocean from the 9th to 12th centuries C.E.
